Ecology Program Overview

Rocky Flats Species Diversity Ecological studies are performed at Rocky Flats to inventory natural resources, assess baseline conditions, and determine potential ecological impacts from Closure Mission activities. Monitoring results help direct management actions taken under the Ecology Program to ensure that the habitat remains in good condition, and that rare ecological elements are protected.  Our staff and specialty technical contractors help ensure that the K-H Team acts as responsible environmental stewards for land that will some day be returned to non-government use.

A Boreal Chorus frog spotted at Rocky Flats Each year we conduct routine ecological monitoring designed to evaluate status of plants, wildlife, birds, wildlife habitat use, plant communities, and aquatic life in the ecosystem. In addition, we conduct special monitoring designed to evaluate species of special concern, such as the Preble’s Meadow Jumping Mouse. These activities ensure that ecological concerns are evaluated and addressed during planning and execution of site Site’s closure mission.

The Ecology program also helps site activites comply with ecological protection regulations, designs revegetation strategies that use native plants, combats the spread of noxious weeds, and provides other natural resource management functions.
