Surface Water Monitoring Network

Water leaving the site at Indiana Street is subject to four categories of monitoring to assess its quality. Pre-discharge monitoring, NPDES of terminal ponds, RFCA compliance monitoring, Non-point of compliance monitoringRocky Flats performs a variety of surface water monitoring in response to regulatory requirements and downstream community concerns. Routine surface water monitoring performed at Rocky Flats includes:

  • Measuring water quality within the Industrial Area to detect new sources of contamination; assessing the performance of facilities or project elements in preventing releases of specific constituents; providing baseline data for Site Closure/D&D activities; and monitoring the quality of rainwater or snowmelt that may accumulate in the area. • Sampling and testing "incidental water" -- water that accumulates in utility pits, berms, footing dams, sumps and other structures – for the presence of contaminants.
  • Monitoring Industrial Area discharges to the terminal ponds, which include surface water runoff, discharges from the Site’s waste water treatment plant, waste water treatment collection system, influent to the waste water treatment plant, discharges into and from the ponds, stream water quality, and water quality of water leaving the site.
